Glendale Elementary board approves fiscal and reporting policy readings; staff reports facilities work ahead of Aug. 4 start

The Glendale Elementary School District Governing Board on July 24 approved several policy actions and received updates on facilities and back-to-school events ahead of the Aug. 4 school opening.
The board voted to adopt the meeting agenda and to approve the consent agenda by voice vote. Board Member Wilson and Board Member Bartels each voted “Aye,” and Chair Mike Martinez cast the tie/affirming vote in each instance.
On policy business, the board approved the first reading of policy manual section D (fiscal management). District counsel and administration told the board the revision clarifies allowable student activity fundraisers; staff said "the district may permit student activity fundraisers that include raffles and bingo games. Such fundraisers must apply comply with Arizona law, Arizona general and auditor general guidance and require prior district approval to ensure compliance." The motion for first reading carried with Wilson, Bartels and the chair voting in favor.
The board also approved the first reading of JLF (reporting child abuse) after staff confirmed the district is in compliance with mandatory reporting requirements. The motion passed by voice vote with Wilson, Bartels and the chair voting “Aye.”
During reports, Assistant Superintendent Sigata Jones updated the board on new teacher induction week, donated lunches for new-teacher events, and outreach: staff thanked Peter Piper for donating lunches and noted Stuff the Bus, an August back-to-school drive with Kiwanis at the local Walmart shopping center. She confirmed the first day of school is Aug. 4 and reminded the board about meet-the-teacher events; Welcome Back for staff was scheduled for July 28 at the Renaissance.
Facilities staff reported multiple failing air-conditioning units at schools; administrators said portable units are being placed while repairs continue. The district reported all but one or two staff positions are filled and that substitute teachers will cover remaining vacancies.
