An unidentified public-safety official told the Stevensville Town Council on July 16 that a wildfire burning in the nearby hills had prompted a mutual-aid response and evacuations.
The official said multiple valley agencies responded and the town sent personnel to command staff. "We sent over at command staff," the speaker said, adding that Florence had personnel at the command post and that multiple aircraft were operating on the fire. The speaker estimated the fire at "somewhere around 50, a little over 50 acres" and said evacuations and animal rescues were underway.
The speaker said six of the town's workers were on the incident and that other valley departments had staff on scene. "Our guys are gonna be kept loose. We got it back home here relatively soon," the speaker said, and added that crews remaining in town were covering the north end of the valley.
Council members did not take any formal action related to the report during the meeting. The speaker warned residents to expect smoke in the valley "for the rest of the summer."
