Maricopa Unified approves personnel schedule; district reports openings for paraprofessionals and teachers

The Maricopa Unified School District governing board on July 23 approved the district personnel schedule after an update from staff that some classified and classroom positions remain open.
Mr. Beckett presented the personnel schedule and told the board the item “is kind of a culmination of a lot of work and effort.” He said the district lost a number of paraprofessionals in May and remains short in classified staffing. “We are not completely filled yet, so we do have openings, especially in the para tracks,” Beckett said.
Beckett said the district currently has six classroom positions open; he added there are 10 classroom positions in total but four are leaves and each classroom currently has a full‑time long‑term substitute. He named openings the district is actively recruiting for, including two social‑studies positions, one English position, an elementary drama teacher, a high‑school stagecraft teacher and a gifted‑education teacher. Beckett said he was optimistic the more routine vacancies would be filled by the next board meeting.
A board member asked when the remaining vacancies would be filled; Beckett replied the social‑studies and English positions should be “relatively easy to fill” and expected updates on hires at the next agenda. The board moved and seconded approval of the personnel schedule; votes recorded for the motion were Jontae Rothschild (aye), Ben Owens (aye), Carol(yn) Lopez (aye), Patty Couture (aye) and Robert Downey (aye).
The action recorded in the meeting minutes approved the personnel schedule as presented; no contract awards, salary changes or specific hire names were recorded in the public portion of the meeting.
