Tuscaloosa City Schools on July 22 told the school board it had received notice that funds from its 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant — approximately $2,500,000 for extended-learning programs such as after-school and summer learning — were released to the district.
An administrator recapping the district's funding status said the 21st Century funds were restored "yesterday," enabling continuation of extended-learning programs the district calls integral to student progress. The administrator said other federal Title funds used for professional development and academic enrichment remain on hold and that the district is relying in part on carryover in those funds to continue personnel and professional-development activities for a short period.
District staff said they were optimistic other frozen funds will be released but that some strategies might need to be altered if funding is not restored. The board asked for a brief recap of which funding streams were restored and which remain frozen.
The announcement prompted no formal action; staff said they would provide additional updates as information about other federal funds becomes available.
