Tuscaloosa board adopts updated 'Focus on Excellence' strategic plan through 2027

The Tuscaloosa City Schools Board of Education on July 22 approved a revised "Focus on Excellence" strategic plan that extends district goals through Feb. 19, 2027, adds several new initiatives and refines earlier work.
The plan, presented by Dr. Pope, updates four pillars — student success with equity and access; stakeholder engagement; safe and supportive learning environments; and organizational effectiveness — and lists 19 initiatives under the student-success pillar. New initiatives listed include a focus on history and social studies education, college and career workforce readiness, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.
Board members said the document reflects ongoing work and asked how the district would sustain initiatives if identified funding sources disappeared. A board member asked, "I know we've identified a source of funding. What happens if that source is no longer there?" Dr. Pope responded, "If that source as of now, when we did this, the the funding source was we would just have to, find funds for it. We've been good, stewards of finding grants, making it work. But without funds, a lot of it may be revamped, or some strategies may have to be, altered." The board also asked staff to provide a one-page checklist showing items marked complete, ongoing, removed or adjusted.
During discussion, the district said it removed certain "buzzwords" from the document where they might hinder grant applications or cause political concern, and that leadership advised keeping the focus on student learning. A board member praised the plan as a "living, working document" that has been updated to reflect completed work and new priorities.
After limited discussion and an offer from the presenter to bring further revisions at a later meeting if the board desired, a motion to approve the plan was called and the board approved it by voice vote.
The adoption keeps the district's strategic framework in place through early 2027 and formalizes several new focus areas and updated timelines; staff said they will circulate a slide-based checklist indicating which initiatives are complete, ongoing or removed to assist member review.
