Cass County sets Sept. 2 public hearing on partial closure of 30 8th Street W.

The Cass County Board of Commissioners voted to set a public hearing for Sept. 2, 2025, on a request to close a portion of 30 8th Street W. tied to the FM diversion project.

Matthew Stamps, of the Cass County Highway Department, told the board the closure is part of work related to the Flood Mitigation (FM) diversion and follows terms of an existing memorandum of understanding with the Cass County Joint Diversion Authority. Stamps said the county will issue public-notice materials once the hearing date and time are finalized.

The hearing date was requested during the board’s regular meeting and a motion to set the public hearing was moved by Commissioner Bettle and seconded by Commissioner Breitling. The motion passed on a roll-call vote with all commissioners recorded as voting in favor.

Why it matters: closing county right-of-way can affect access for nearby properties, emergency response and scheduled construction, and the hearing will be the formal opportunity for property owners and other members of the public to comment before the board takes any final action.

What the county said: Stamps described this action as the next step in a process tied to the diversion project’s construction schedule and said notice will be sent to the public once the hearing is set.

Next steps: The board will consider public testimony at the Sept. 2, 2025, hearing and may decide whether to approve, modify or deny the requested closure after receiving public comment and any additional staff reports.
