The Alice ISD Board of Trustees approved a district recommendation July 21 to grant broadcast rights for football and playoff games to local radio station KOPY FM (Y92) for the coming school year.
Phil Pena and Frank Gomez, representing the radio station, told trustees that the community had asked the station to resume play-by-play coverage while the district's stadium will host away games and to restore a longtime tradition of listening to games on the radio. "We wholeheartedly ask for your approval," a station representative said.
A motion to approve the recommendation was made and seconded during the action portion of the meeting; the board voted in favor and the motion passed. Trustees and district staff discussed that the arrangement will spotlight students and be used for broader programming — not only football — and that additional student and academic features may be developed alongside athletics broadcasts.
The board did not discuss contractual financial details in depth during the public item; the motion on the action agenda was recorded as approved.
Action: staff to finalize the broadcast agreement and return any required contract documents for board record.
