Board holds workshop on school parcels; agrees to keep Greenville intact and to plot Lee as three parcels

The Madison County School Board held a property-parcel workshop on Aug. 18 to review proposals for surplus school sites and heard presentations from community groups, municipal leaders and private proposers.
Representatives of True Wisdom and a local coalition outlined plans for Greenville that would use the school building and surrounding land for a library, community farm and historic interpretation of the Greenville Training School. The town of Lee’s representative asked that the Lee parcel remain under public stewardship or be returned to local control with protections to ensure public use.
After discussion the board reached the following direction: hold the Greenville property as a single parcel (do not divide it at this time) to preserve comprehensive redevelopment options; for the Lee site, split the larger tract into three parcels — a western parcel (pine-tree buffer/back field), the central school parcel, and a separate parcel containing the county library under its existing lease — and obtain a survey and legal descriptions showing those boundaries.
Board members and staff agreed staff would obtain updated surveys and plot legal descriptions for the parcels discussed and return with acreages and mapped boundaries so the board can consider separate conveyance or retention decisions. Several proposers indicated they are willing to adjust proposals to match parcel boundaries and to offer funding or programming commitments if selected.
No final conveyances were approved tonight; the meeting produced direction and a plan for the next steps: surveys, legal descriptions and follow-up presentations to the board.
