The Madison County School Board on Aug. 18 directed district staff to workshop proposed staffing changes after several board members raised concerns about procedure, transparency and costs.
District chief finance and HR presenter Mr. Copeland outlined proposed changes including converting two assistant principal positions at Madison County High School into deans, moving a bridge assistant principal role to a district-level coordinator of special projects, and other staffing adjustments intended to reduce costs and provide oversight during school consolidation.
Board members argued about whether the superintendent should first present new positions and emphasized the board’s authority to create or remove positions. Several members asked for a workshop so the full board could examine job descriptions, salary impacts and the staffing table before any final action.
The board voted to move agenda items 6.2 and 6.3 (staffing plan updates and the coordinator job description) to a workshop. The motion to workshop was made by Miss Knight and seconded by Miss Hagan and carried on a board vote called in the meeting.
On personnel changes, the board approved the personnel slate with two exceptions: the appointments for Mr. Brown and Mr. White were removed and sent to the workshop for further review. A motion to approve the personnel changes with those exceptions passed (vote recorded in the meeting as 4–1).
Board members said they wanted clear documentation — including salary figures and written job descriptions — before voting on the contested positions. Superintendent Dr. Pickles and HR staff said the requested job descriptions and the staffing table would be provided to board members ahead of the workshop.
The board did not adopt the proposed staffing changes at tonight’s meeting; it instead set a workshop date to revisit 6.2 and 6.3 and required staff to supply a staffing spreadsheet, job descriptions and cost details in advance.
