Janice Robinson, a resident of District 1, told the Mobile City Council that Josephine Street has become a dangerous cut-through for motorists and that elderly residents have difficulty accessing mailboxes because of fast-moving traffic.
Robinson said the oldest resident on the street is 95 and the youngest is 70 and asked the council for help with traffic calming, tree trimming and regular street sweeping. "My street has become a street that you would consider interstate," she said.
Councilor Penn responded that Josephine Street was among streets recently repaved and that the council has secured a new street sweeper. "We're gonna make sure that we get that street sweeper," Penn said, and added that staff member Brown had recorded Robinson's concerns and that he had already contacted the department responsible for tree trimming and Alabama Power about utility issues. Penn asked Robinson to remain engaged with staff to ensure follow-up.
Robinson also thanked the council for work she sees around the city. Council discussion on the item consisted of staff follow-up commitments and a pledge to coordinate the street-sweeper schedule and tree maintenance; no formal action or vote on Josephine Street traffic calming was taken at this meeting.
