Lincoln County board committee advances draft AI-use policy for full board consideration

Committee member Daniel Turner summarized the group's recommendation, saying the committee favored a phased approach: minimal, approved-AI exposure for kindergarten through eighth grade and broader access for ninth through 12th grades so older students "can make informed decisions about their use based on their working knowledge." Turner said the committee used a TSBA model policy as a starting point and added local language.
The draft adds twice-yearly formal review dates (June and December), directs that outputs from AI programs be verified for "errors, inaccuracies, and biases," and proposes that an approved list of AI programs be published and included in the student handbook. Turner also said teachers should provide instruction on responsible AI use "as provided by district staff."
Board members did not vote on the policy Monday. Turner told the board the committee is asking that the revised policy be brought back for a formal vote at the next regular meeting, and several members agreed to schedule a short policy committee meeting immediately before that meeting to finalize wording.
The recommendation references Policy 4.214 by number in the paperwork distributed to the board and cites a Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) model policy as the baseline used in drafting.
