Madison Heights recognizes teen library card contest winners and awards first Juneteenth scholarship

Madison Heights celebrated winners of a library card design contest and presented the city's first Juneteenth scholarship during the Aug. 25 City Council meeting.

A library representative described the card-signup campaign and introduced two new card designs produced by local teens. “Hello. This September, the Madison Heights, Public Library invites everyone to celebrate library card sign up month and discover how a single card can open the door to endless opportunities,” the library presenter said. The presenter congratulated contest winners Liliana Lowers and Chloe Brown and said the cards would be available at the library during September.

Council members and the presenter also recognized the city’s first Juneteenth scholarship recipient. An event speaker said the award recognizes academic achievement and an understanding of Juneteenth’s meaning: “It's my honor to present this year's Juneteenth scholarship award, which recognizes not only the academic achievement, but also a deep understanding the meaning of Juneteenth, which is freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.” The presenter praised the recipient’s essay and invited the council and audience to join in congratulating the student.

Council members and presenters encouraged residents to attend upcoming cultural and arts events and to look for the winners’ card designs on the city’s channels.

What happens next: The library will distribute the new card designs during September; the scholarship recipient was publicly acknowledged and photographed at the meeting.
