Forsyth County budget staff told commissioners on Aug. 25 that a capital project to evaluate and prepare a roughly 64‑acre parcel at Smith & Reynolds Airport, which contains an old landfill, is not viable at present because remediation costs were too high.
Kimberly Bussey, deputy budget director, said the airport project used pay‑as‑you‑go funds earmarked for economic development and that an airport‑commissioned assessment completed in February 2024 concluded the site is not currently viable for development without substantial remediation. The available balance on the project is $1,234,530, Bussey said; the recommendation moves $88,000 to county buildings to correct a prior project-closing error and return $1,141,530 to the economic development reserves element for future use.
Bussey said most remaining expenditures for the airport project were for reporting and management of the Brownfield site. The transfer will formally close the project and free the returned funds for other county capital uses or for future economic‑development projects.
Commissioners did not debate the substance at length but a commissioner asked for a follow-up meeting on complex aspects of the accounting and Bussey offered to discuss the item in more detail offline.
