Council approves $58,650 to secure Hendricks Ranch Adobe after commission finds safety risk

The Moreno Valley City Council unanimously approved an appropriation of approximately $58,650 on Aug. 19 to secure and stabilize the Hendricks Ranch Adobe after the Environmental and Historical Preservation Commission identified immediate safety and trespass risks.
Vice Chair Nathan Urena, speaking for the commission, said the structure is designated as a local landmark and recent vandalism has left doors and plywood removed, creating a risk that would worsen with aftershocks or a moderate seismic event. “Our main concern is the stability and the overall safety around the property,” Urena said in the commission’s presentation, and commissioners asked the council to fund fencing, boarding, and lighting to reduce trespass and injury risks.
Staff explained the adobe sits on an MBU (Moreno Valley Utility) property and noted longer-term options are constrained by utility expansion plans; relocation of the structure would carry much higher costs if the property must be used for future infrastructure. Staff said today’s appropriation would fund boards, better locks, security lighting and a fence. The council approved the one-time appropriation and directed staff to return with future options if the commission pursues state-level designation or additional preservation steps.
The vote was unanimous. Councilmember remarks noted the city should pursue partnerships and grants when possible and that securing the site now does not commit the city to full rehabilitation or relocation.
