'Healthy DeSoto' plan moved to council retreat for deeper review

Board and staff discussed the Healthy DeSoto initiative, a multi-stakeholder study intended to define long-term goals and real-estate implications for health, sports medicine and related enterprise districts.
Staff described the project as a way to establish what it would take to attract a community hospital, sports/orthopedics center and research campus linked to local workforce development. ‘‘This effort is meant to identify what it might take, the people who needed to be involved, the real estate that needs to be involved,’’ a staff presenter said.
The board agreed the issue requires a longer, less formal forum and moved discussion to the council’s retreat so council members and staff can review the planned scope and ask the 15 questions staff identified from prior briefings. Staff said they will bring back a refined scope of work and a professional services contract for the board to consider after the retreat.
Board members asked staff to ensure the retreat materials respond to earlier questions raised by council and to show how proposed health-related investments would translate into job creation and real estate projects.
