The Travis County Austin Animal Advisory Commission elected Dr. Nilsen (Dr. Nilsen) as chair at the Aug. 11 meeting following nominations and a vote.
Nominations were made from the floor and multiple commissioners spoke about qualifications and independence. Dr. Nilsen said she would serve if elected but noted a preference for new leadership if other nominees could achieve a majority. Commissioner Delzaitis also accepted a nomination.
The chair called the vote and announced, "So it is 7–4, and Doctor Nilsen is the new chair." The commission then moved to future agenda items and adjournment.
Why it matters: The chair presides over commission meetings and sets meeting tone for agendas and public engagement. Commissioners and members of the public discussed expectations that the chair balance advocacy for animal welfare with impartial meeting leadership.
What to watch: New chair Dr. Nilsen said she will present a draft annual review at the next meeting and signaled an intention to be an active presiding officer while tempering advocacy in her meeting role.
