Commission approves GoodFix working-group recommendation; commissioners add Travis County to outreach ask

The Travis County Austin Animal Advisory Commission on Aug. 11 unanimously approved a recommendation from the GoodFix working group to prioritize animal-welfare policy and marketing support for spay/neuter events.
Shelley Lebam, a volunteer and GoodFix working-group participant, said the July GoodFix event at Circuit of The Americas was the largest to date, with capacity crowds and 1,124 surgeries performed across dogs and cats. She thanked event hosts and donors and urged another event in the same area.
Commissioner Doctor Nilsen moved to approve the working-group recommendation; Commissioner Loignan seconded. Commissioners adopted a friendly amendment to add “Travis County Commissioners Court” alongside “Austin City Council” in the recommendation’s outreach language. Staff confirmed the recommendation was posted that day and said the final wording would reflect the amendment.
Why it matters: High-volume spay/neuter events are a key strategy to reduce intake over time and reduce euthanasia for space; volunteers and vendors reported strong turnout and encouraged repeating the Circuit of The Americas location where demand is concentrated.
What the motion did: The commission’s recommendation will be forwarded to Austin City Council and, per the amendment, the Travis County Commissioners Court, requesting continued policy and marketing support for spay/neuter outreach and vendor coordination. The motion passed unanimously.
