BHS activities update: 206 academic/athletic recognitions, three conference titles, gym floor and sound upgrades underway

Jay Huff presented Burlington High School activities updates at the Aug. 11 board meeting, telling the board that the high school recorded 206 recognitions this past year for academic, conference and state honors and won three conference titles (girls’ basketball, girls’ soccer and boys’ bowling). He also reported more than 200 athletes registered for fall sports and approximately 85 students in marching band.
Huff described facility improvements at the high school: the gym floor installation is scheduled (work described as nearly complete, with bleacher work and new finish) and a new gym sound system has been installed and tested. He noted the gym is still a construction site but that the new sound system produced clearer audio in preliminary checks. He also complimented the new shot-put landing area, fences and other facility upgrades.
Operational items included a possible change to the homecoming football game day (the district may move it from Friday to Thursday because of difficulty finding officials for a Friday night) and ongoing "sharing agreement" work he and other administrators were trying to finalize. Board members and parents asked about specifics such as lettering for athletes, band registration glitches in the band app and parking/access at SCC for early-season events; Huff and administrators said they would follow up on those items.
Student representative Mateo summarized upcoming student events: musical camp, Seussical, marching band, a student council retreat and Fall Fest on Aug. 22. The student report also noted open-house activities and a pool "splashback" at a district event.
