Council approves sister‑city partnership with Iquitos, Peru; nonprofit to manage exchanges at no cost to city

The Lafayette City Council on Aug. 5 unanimously approved a resolution establishing a sister‑city partnership with Iquitos, Peru, and authorized the Boulder County nonprofit 1 Voice for Change to manage the program activities at no cost to the city.
Assistant City Manager Alex Nelson told the council the concept began in January and that the nonprofit had offered to facilitate cultural and educational exchanges. "The resolution before you would really just memorialize this relationship and authorize 1 Voice for Change to begin these activities on our behalf," Nelson said.
Felicity, a representative of 1 Voice for Change, thanked council and said the partnership could enable teacher exchanges, professional development, and cultural exchanges. "I am so honored to live in Lafayette... I think this will be a wonderful opportunity," she said.
Councilor Barnes moved to approve the resolution and the motion passed unanimously; staff said they are awaiting a reciprocal resolution from Iquitos and will coordinate next steps and potential in‑person visits.
The resolution states the partnership will be carried out at no cost to the city and designates the nonprofit to coordinate exchanges and activities. Council and staff said they would work on logistics for student or delegational visits in future months.
