The district’s enrollment presenter said the district was up about 134 students at the time of the meeting and reported an elementary class average of about 22. The presenter noted localized grade-level variances (heavier kindergarten or grade clusters at specific elementary schools) and that temporary waivers processed in July resulted in most requests being approved.
On the HEARD diversion work, staff said municipal partners are contributing and the City of Altoona pledged $60,000. The district signed a document showing support for HEARD and staff indicated they expect to propose a district contribution of approximately $40,000 for board consideration at the next meeting. Staff said the program aims to provide restorative diversion options for youth so juvenile justice contact is reduced and local community volunteers and partners deliver programming. District leaders said programming would begin quickly once the leadership team and funding commitments are finalized.
Board members asked whether a formal approval would be needed for the district contribution; staff said they would return with a formal request for action at a future meeting. Trustees expressed support for the idea while seeking the formal budgetary item for approval before funds are spent.
