Committee recommends 5-year lease for police satellite office in Pipikio area

The Hawaii County Committee on Finance voted Aug. 5 to forward Resolution 251-25 to the full County Council with a favorable recommendation. The resolution authorizes the mayor to enter a five-year lease, with up to four five-year extension options, with GEC Development Group LLC for space the Hawaii Police Department will use as a satellite office.
Council member Kimball thanked the property owners and asked about lease value; administration later confirmed the space will cost $600 per month, utilities included. Major Jeremy Evangelista of the Hawaii Police Department described the space as a small footprint the department can use for officers to work between calls and said the department was grateful for community support. “We’d be happy to be able to have a footprint in the Pipikio community, someplace for our officers to work out of,” Major Evangelista said.
Committee members asked about connectivity and office features. Major Evangelista said officers are issued mobile data terminals that use cellular networks rather than relying on site internet. The space described in committee discussion is roughly 120 square feet with access to a common-area bathroom; the $600 monthly rent was said to include maintenance and utilities.
Council members said the site is intended as a workspace, not a staffed substation. Members noted past examples of underused satellite offices but emphasized that the purpose here is to provide an officer a place to write reports, use a desk and connect between calls.
The motion to forward Resolution 251-25 passed on a voice/roll-call vote recorded by the clerk with seven members in favor and two members excused from the vote, and the measure will move to the full council for further action.
