Board OKs forms allowing CTE students to do live work on outside vehicles

The Jersey Shore Area School District Board on July 28 approved forms and procedures to allow older career-technical education (CTE) students to perform live work on customer vehicles.
Superintendent Dr. J. Ulmer explained the district reviewed insurance and liability with staff and administrators before returning the forms for board approval. “We needed forms in place, and that's what you're approving is those forms to allow that process to occur,” Ulmer said.
Ulmer said the idea was developed by the teacher and board member Mister Mintzer and reviewed with insurance by Mister Anderson; the board heard that local businesses serving on the CTE advisory board participated in the discussion.
Under the approved process, instructors will determine whether a student can handle a given job and sign-off procedures and forms will be used for outside work. Ulmer told the board the district verified insurance arrangements and recovery procedures to protect the district before approving the program.
Board members asked whether the program could create competition with local businesses; Ulmer said advisory-board businesses were involved and that the program will be limited to jobs within the students’ scope of work.
The motion approving miscellaneous agenda items — which included the CTE forms — passed by voice vote during the miscellaneous consent block.
