Natural resources inventory work continues; volunteers plan West River garden workday

The Grand Island Conservation Advisory Board heard progress updates on a town Natural Resources Inventory (NRI) and on volunteer-led landscape projects.
Chair Diane Evans reported that two consultants — Robin Hill and a Prospect Hill Consulting representative — have been contracted to compile the NRI and will present a draft of gathered data at a meeting the board set for Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. The board said the NRI is intended as an evidence base for a future open-space plan and that the consultants are building the NRI from existing data layers so it can be updated over time rather than remaining a static document.
Gina, representing the Grand Island Nature Alliance, reported on the West River native garden in the median strip near West River and Riverside Salem. Alliance volunteers plan a workday for remulching, weeding and planting; the group secured some funding and purchased plans, and Parks staff have done some maintenance work. Gina said a sign will be installed and that the group is starting a yard-certification packet tailored to Grand Island to encourage native-plant landscaping and public education.
Members discussed outreach and logistics: the board will circulate NRI meeting materials and add the August draft review to the calendar; volunteers were asked to sign up for garden watering/maintenance shifts and to share contact information so staff can coordinate site access and hose/watering needs.
Board members asked that consultants and project leaders be invited to the upcoming meeting so the full draft NRI can be reviewed and public comments collected.
No formal motion or funding decision was made; members treated both items as reports and action items to follow up with meetings and document sharing.
