Middletown City School District announced that it will issue "student success cards" to all students in kindergarten through 12th grade and require students in grades 7 through 12 to wear photo identification while at school. The district said cards will be used for school ID purposes, bus boarding and in the future to access services such as library checkout and meal accounts.
The transportation department said the program is intended to improve student safety and route efficiency. Peterman Bus Services, the district's partner, will operate a fleet the district described as well maintained and driven by trained staff. The district said all bus routing and real-time GPS updates will be communicated through the myRide K12 app; parents and guardians can access information by logging into the app or the district website.
District staff said students must carry their success cards daily and present them when boarding and exiting the school bus. Buses will be equipped with card scanners the district said will verify that students are on the correct bus and at the correct designated stop.
The announcement described additional current and planned uses for the cards: serving as identification at school and athletic events, checking into school when arriving late, checking out of school when leaving early, and an alternate means to access school lunch accounts. The district said library checkout and other services are planned to be added in the future.
