School committee approves consent agenda, booster banners and new free breakfast program

The Longmeadow School Committee on Aug. 13 approved its consent agenda of building-use requests, granted short-term permission for sponsor recognition banners at the Longmeadow High School football field and heard that the district will offer a free breakfast program for students this year.
The consent agenda (approved as a package) included three building-use requests: Blueberry Hill PTO’s “trunk-or-treat” event on Oct. 24 (rain date Oct. 25), use of the high-school concession stand by the Longmeadow Football Booster Club for youth football Saturdays, and a Parks & Recreation request to use the Glenbrook gym for coed basketball skills/drills for grades 3–8. The committee approved the consent agenda by roll call (Adam; Jamie Hensch; Nicole Schwanier; Zach; Emily Hanson; Kate Bean; Michaela Fitzgerald — all yes).
Sponsorship banners and policy considerations
William Welch, president of the Longmeadow Football Booster Club, spoke during public comments and described logistical and Title IX considerations for the booster group’s fundraising; he told the committee the quotes the boosters received to purchase new uniforms ranged from about $22,000 to approximately $40,000 for the program he described. The booster requested permission to display small sponsorship recognition banners along the perimeter fencing of the stadium field during youth and junior-varsity games.
School staff and committee members discussed applicable policy limits and town sign bylaws and recommended a conditional approval. The committee’s motion approved the banners “as outlined in the building request dated 08/07/2025 for William Welch, president of Longmeadow Football, and in adherence with town bylaws.” Committee members said the approval is time-limited and subject to town-by-law sizing and content rules and to removal if the display does not meet school standards.
Free breakfast program
A staff representative announced a new district breakfast program starting this school year that will be free to all students. The plan calls for grab-and-go prepackaged meals served in cafeterias at the middle and high school and on a cart at elementary school main entrances; the district will monitor participation and consider adding a second elementary location if needed.
Other procedural matters
The committee also voted to enter executive session under Mass. Gen. Laws ch. 30A §21(a) for permitted purposes and not to reconvene into open session. The roll-call vote to enter executive session was unanimous among members present.
