Commission hears subcommittee update on school resource model; MCPD covers 22 of 26 high schools

Commissioners heard a school-subcommittee update Aug. 11 that the Montgomery County Police Department’s community engagement officers — the unit commonly referred to as school resource officers — are assigned to 22 of the county’s 26 high schools.
“We spoke about their annual training through the Maryland Safe Schools Training Association,” Commissioner Sean said, describing the subcommittee’s recent conversation with Officer Innocente, who provided perspective on the department’s community engagement officer model. Commissioner Sean noted that the other four high schools are covered by other agencies such as Rockville City and the Park Police.
Officer Innocente confirmed Rockville City Police will be taking responsibility for Wootton High School in addition to Rockville High School, and explained the subcommittee had submitted a consolidated list of follow-up questions through Commissioner Terry for more detailed answers. Commissioners said they will await further responses and expect staff to bring those answers back to the full commission.
The commission did not take formal action on the school-subcommittee update; members asked staff to circulate the subcommittee’s consolidated questions and the officer’s forthcoming responses.
