Summer facilities work and joint-use access top Lemon Grove school–city agenda; pickleball courts, playgrounds and restrooms discussed

Lemon Grove — The Lemon Grove School District’s director of facilities, Carlos Salas, reviewed summer work and upcoming projects at a July 29 joint meeting, and councilmembers and trustees focused on joint community access to school facilities.
Salas said the district invested about $4.6 million in projects during the 2024–25 summer cycle, including exterior painting at multiple campuses, partial roof work, playground resurfacing, storm-drain repairs and custodial cleaning across roughly 295,000 square feet of building space. He listed projects at specific campuses: San Miguel (playground asphalt, parking-lot construction phases), Mount Vernon (fencing, exterior refresh, and parking-lot storm-drain work), Monterey Heights STEAM Academy (exterior painting, MPR HVAC installation, bathroom refresh) and the Early Childhood Education Center (monument signage and continuing construction work).
Salas said district plans for the next five years include additional blacktop resurfacing, gate and fence updates, and upgrades to camera surveillance and front-door energy systems. He also confirmed the district coordinated with a local pickleball group to include pickleball lines in the resurfacing at Lemon Grove Academy North (LGAN).
Several councilmembers and trustees pressed staff on joint-use access: community sports groups and adults currently asked for weekend restroom access at sites hosting pickleball and other recreation, and speakers raised safety and liability concerns that limit restroom availability while schools operate extended-learning programs. Councilmembers and district staff said they would explore solutions, including possible scheduling, parent-supervision requirements, or infrastructure changes, and look for ways to open additional school grounds for community use after school hours.
No formal policy or interlocal agreement on joint use or restroom access was adopted; city and district staff said they would follow up with specific plans and revisit the issue at future meetings.
