District shifts AVID expenses into Title II to preserve general fund without service cuts

During the budget review, Mr. Bakke told board members the district expects an overall reduction of about $280,000 in a specific line but said they had matched services the district normally funds. “We're able to expand it... there's not gonna be any additional dollars within the general fund,” Bakke said. He explained that AVID began as a new initiative funded under Title IV but, after it became established and began receiving sustained professional development, components of the program qualify under Title II.
Board members asked whether the recent position change from coordinator to director was anticipated to be covered by Title II funding; staff replied that they had not expected to fund it from Title IV when that decision was made, and that shifting eligible salary and benefits to Title II helped balance the budget.
The board did not take action on this item; the remarks appeared as part of a budget update and were for informational purposes.
