Chamber drone show approved for Alva holiday weekend as summer events drive hotel bookings

Participants at a community meeting in Alva approved funding for a 100‑drone holiday show proposed by the local chamber, and staff and volunteers reported higher hotel occupancy and strong visitor numbers tied to recent summer events.

The chamber’s application for a “Bridal Christmas Home and Holiday Drone Show” received a motion and was approved with funding not to exceed $11,000. The drone show vendor, Dynamic Skies of Edmond, proposed a roughly 15‑minute program; chamber staff said the company offered a $4,000 discount and would work with the chamber on animated elements such as a Santa sleigh.

The proposal matters to the local economy because meeting presenters tied the drone show to efforts to extend visitor stays and boost overnight bookings. “If we publicize this all in Northwest Oklahoma and southern Kansas, we’ll get some people to come down to visit family and to stay the night,” said Megan, identified in the meeting record as chamber staff. Megan said the drone performance would take place on Friday night as an add‑on to the community’s weekend activities, with the light parade scheduled for Saturday.

In related financial updates, speakers reported hotel‑tax receipts and event attendance that they said reflected increased tourism. A July total of $69,000 in receipts for fiscal year 2026 was cited during the discussion; meeting participants said final September numbers typically arrive around Sept. 10–11. Rayce, speaking for the Education Foundation, presented event tracking and occupancy estimates and noted repeat increases in room nights compared with last year. Rayce said one downtown measurement captured about 2,100 unique visitors over a multi‑night period and that a separate “night light” site registered about 970 unique visitors with an average dwell time of about 127 minutes.

Rayce also described a simple revenue‑to‑room conversion he used to estimate stays: using local sales tax revenue, an assumed per‑room rate drawn from a Holiday Inn Express listing and the reported revenues, he said the calculated room nights approximately doubled year over year. “Your rooms are running double. You’re booking twice as many rooms as you did last year,” Rayce said.

Organizers said the drone show and other weekend programming are timed to coincide with Northwestern’s commencement and a campus band and choir schedule that event organizers say will help draw attendees and encourage extended stays. Presenters suggested the drone show would serve as a finale to other Friday night activities, including a soup stroll, meet‑Santa activities and a tree lighting.

The motion on the chamber’s drone show application passed. The meeting record shows Melinda and Sadie among members who voted in favor; meeting attendance was summarized later as five of six members present.

Organizers said they will confirm staging and parking logistics with local property owners before firming the drone site and will coordinate timing with campus events.
