Council approves Roseville Electric sponsorship, names universally accessible playground

The Roseville City Council on September 3 approved an agreement with Roseville Electric Utility that gives the utility three years of naming-rights for the city’s universally accessible playground at the Placer Valley Soccer Complex.
Council and Parks staff said the $75,000 sponsorship will be used to support playground upkeep and promotional materials; Roseville Electric described the agreement as a public-education opportunity about local energy programs. The vote was unanimous.
The playground — described by staff as the city’s largest universally accessible playground at just over 1 acre — will include sensory elements for visitors who are hearing- or visually-impaired, a quiet space for visitors who need a break from stimulation, and an adaptive restroom. Parks, Recreation and Libraries Director Jill Geller said the play area will be open to the public even when the fenced tournament fields are closed.
Jeff Niersen, PRL recreation manager, told the council the overall Placer Valley Soccer Complex includes 10 lighted synthetic turf rectangle fields, two plaza areas, nearly 950 parking spaces and a looped public trail; the playground sits outside the fenced tournament fields so it can be used independently.
Bill Chaplin of Roseville Electric Utility said the utility will place a dedicated display near the playground and use the opportunity to connect families to energy-efficiency services and to explain the community solar array located nearby. "This playground sponsorship helps us effectively reach one of our target audiences, Roseville families," Chaplin said.
Council members and staff also discussed alternative name suggestions during the meeting; Council Member Bruce suggested “Power of Play” as an alternative to the working name presented by staff. Staff recommended, and the council approved, authorizing the city manager to execute the agreement with Roseville Electric Utility under the terms presented.
The approval was made by motion, second and roll-call vote. The clerk recorded the votes as yes by Vice Mayor Karen Alvord, Council Member Heldeshout and Council Member Ricucci; the motion passed unanimously.
City staff said the playground will open alongside the remainder of the complex once construction is complete; staff indicated a grand opening date will be set when the completion date is confirmed.
