Drummond Town Preservation seeks school board permission for Bailey Memorial Hall state marker

Christopher Newman of Drummond Town Preservation told the Accomack County School Board he seeks permission to file a state historical marker application for Bailey Memorial Hall, a building now owned by the school division that was once Drummond Town Baptist Church.
"We need permission from the school board to complete the application, which we will send to Richmond," Newman said, reading the proposed marker text and describing the building's history and its listing on the Virginia Landmarks Register (Dec. 16, 1983). The marker language Newman read calls the structure "Bailey Memorial Hall, circa 1870, formerly Drummond Town Baptist Church" and summarizes its move to the present location in 1912 and its donation to the school system by Mrs. Evelyn Bailey Tiffany.
Newman said Drummond Town Preservation would like to see the building restored and used as a cultural and fine-arts center for the town and Accomack County. He said the group previously received permission to place a temporary nameplate on the building and now seeks a permanent steel state marker.
Board members thanked Newman for the presentation and said they would discuss the marker request with Superintendent Dr. Miller and notify the preservation group of the board's decision. No formal vote on the marker was taken at the meeting.
