Council authorizes school resource officer agreement with parochial schools

The Washington City Council on Aug. 18 authorized execution of an agreement with Saint Francis Borgia Regional High School, Saint Francis Borgia grade school, Our Lady of Lourdes School and Emmanuel Lutheran School to assign one school resource officer (SRO) to those parochial schools. The ordinance (7b) passed on second reading.
City staff described the measure as the second year of the parochial SRO program and said the first year had "gone very well." The council approved moving forward with the agreement.
The transcript records two references to the officer assignment that are not consistent: early in the meeting the council approved reappointment of an officer identified as Ben Hellebusch; during the SRO discussion a speaker said the assignment "will be the same officer" and later the transcript contains a reference to "Officer Lowe." The meeting record does not resolve those differences. The article therefore reports the council's action on the agreement and notes that the transcript identifies one officer for reappointment earlier in the meeting but uses a different name later in the SRO discussion.
Votes: councilmembers voted in favor on second reading and the ordinance passed.
