ADOT southeast district reports progress on US 60 Queen Creek bridge, Waterfall Canyon and nearby projects

ADOT’s Southeast District reported Aug. 15 on active construction projects including the Queen Creek Bridge replacement on U.S. 60, the adjacent Waterfall Canyon Box Culvert/bridge project, and several pavement and passing-lane contracts across Graham and nearby counties.
“Queen Creek Bridge is about 43% complete with 51% time spent,” Todd Emery, ADOT Southeast District administrator, told the board. He said Ames Construction is the contractor on the Queen Creek Bridge; the contract bid amount is about $40,700,000 and the estimated completion date is August 2027. Work at the site included pier construction and a westbound rockfall barrier.
The adjacent Waterfall Canyon Bridge and box culvert project (also bid with the Queen Creek Bridge) is about 23% complete on a contract of about $3,900,000 with an estimated 2027 completion. Emery showed photos of piers, drilled shafts and completed rockfall slopes; he said closures and detours that have supported rockfall cuts are tapering as the work progresses.
Other projects discussed included: - US 191 pavement rehabilitation (Mileposts 163–173), contractor F & F Construction, contract ~ $10,100,000; project about 96% complete, estimated finish September (per report). - US 191 roundabout at SR 75/SR 78 (MP 154), Granite Construction, ~ $6,500,000; project 83% complete, near finish. - US 70 passing-lane project near Bylas (Mileposts 287.9–289), Sholo Construction, ~ $3,500,000; estimated completion March 2026. - Ray Lane to Eighth Street pavement rehabilitation on US 70 (Outpost 335–340), Sunland Asphalt and Construction, ~ $9,500,000; start in early phase and estimated completion June 2026.
Emery fielded a question from the chair about how long intermittent Tuesday–Thursday closures on US 60 might continue and said closures are tapering as rockfall work completes. The board and several local speakers later thanked ADOT for timely re-openings and for its traffic-closure communications on 511 and local media.
Why this matters: These projects affect regional travel, freight and local access. The Queen Creek Bridge is a major, multi-year contract on a high-volume corridor; timely completion affects detour duration and local economic connectivity.
