Council adopts decomposed-granite standard for alternative trail and sidewalk treatments

After prior discussion of alternative road standards, Hideout Town Council approved a written specification for decomposed-granite (DG) trail surfacing to be added to the town’s engineering standards. The specification applies to newly approved DG trails or the repair/replacement of existing gravel trails when built under an alternative road standard.
The engineering note added to the Town’s standards calls for a surface course consisting of two inches of compacted decomposed granite over a minimum three-inch compacted road base (total minimum compacted thickness 5 inches). The policy sets placement and compaction guidance and notes that DG surfaces should be moistened and compacted during installation to ensure durability. The change also clarifies where DG trail notes will be posted in the town’s standard sheets.
Council adopted the specification by motion and vote. Staff said the DG option is more mountain-appropriate than full concrete or continuous asphalt, is comparatively inexpensive, and provides a durable walking and soft-biking surface for trails in hillside conditions. The council directed staff to include the specification in the engineering-manual section s t 8 and to use the DG standard where the town approves an alternative road sidewalk treatment.
