Department on Aging outlines senior safety event, reports 30,000 meals served year to date

The county Department on Aging announced a senior-safety conference supported by a $1,900 mini-grant, detailed meal-delivery and in-home service numbers, and described outreach to older adults across Jackson County.
The Jackson County Department on Aging told commissioners it received a $1,900 mini-grant to hold a senior safety conference with WellWise Services on Sept. 24 and will host a public shred day the following day, Sept. 25.
The department said the conference will include a presentation by American 1’s fraud fighters division and that attendees will receive small items such as pocket magnifiers meant to help older adults read documents.
In a month-by-month summary, the department reported more than 30,000 meals delivered countywide through senior nutrition sites and home-delivered meals year to date. For the month of June, the department said 697 people received home-delivered meals, 207 people received in-home services such as personal care or respite for caregivers, and staff provided more than 1,000 hours of in-home service.
The department also reported outreach activity that led to 96 in-home assessments for people new to services and 82 new participants at county senior centers so far this year.
A motion to receive the Department on Aging report passed by voice vote.
