Little Compton approves new compost signage at transfer station; donors cover most cost

The Little Compton Town Council voted Aug. 5 to install new signage and pamphlet boxes at the town transfer station to raise awareness of the town’s food-composting program and to support public education on backyard composting.

Marty, speaking for Lavinia Gatson and the committee for education promotion, presented the volunteer committee’s report and asked the town to install a large 12-square-foot sign at the compost collection area, directional signage at trash and recycling locations to point users to the compost bins, and two pamphlet boxes (one at the compost bins and one at the transfer-station entrance). The committee provided approximate cost estimates: $285 for the large sign, $75 for a smaller sign, $44 for compost stands and additional small costs; the total estimate presented was about $480. The committee reported it had raised $450 from two private donors and asked the council to permit installation and to have the Department of Public Works handle mounting and placement.

A councilor moved that the town proceed with posting the signs and have the DPW director handle installation; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The committee said it will cover most of the cost and asked the town to install the signage and the pamphlet boxes.

Discussion-only items: committee members described educational work already under way — backyard composting demonstrations and future talks — and said new signage would improve correct use of compost bins and reduce contamination.
