Klamath County commissioners on Tuesday discussed options for a county emergency operations center and agreed to prioritize the Summers Lane facility as a lodging and operations location for emergency responders while continuing work on the Vandenberg site.
County staff and commissioners described Summers Lane as immediately usable with opportunities for revenue generation and less ongoing cost concern than the Vandenberg property. Commissioners asked staff to close administrative loops to allow use of Summers Lane in about two weeks where feasible, including access arrangements for staff, while deferring long-term leasing steps.
On Vandenberg, commissioners expressed concern about the ongoing operational costs and the county’s ability to fund maintenance and facilities charges if staff were to relocate permanently. Staff noted that the EOC grant program the county expects to pursue does not open until 2026, giving the county time to resolve funding questions.
Commissioners also discussed coordinating space needs with 9-1-1, which the record shows is on a month-to-month lease and has indicated interest in backup space and an EOC. Meeting comments said the 9-1-1 lease is about $7,000 per year (roughly $525 per month) on a month-to-month basis.
No formal vote was recorded on the EOC sites; the board directed staff and liaisons to continue work on Summers Lane logistics and to meet offline about Vandenberg cost questions and funding options.
