Board approves hires, DCTC agreement amendment, salary schedule, resolutions and facilities purchases

The Woodhaven-Brownstown School District Board of Education on July 22 approved a set of personnel, contractual and capital items by voice vote.
Personnel: The board approved two professional staff hires effective July 23, 2025: Zachary Robinson as Irving Elementary physical education teacher and Kenya Salinas as speech and language pathologist. The board also approved Schedule B athletic/academic positions for 2025–26, including Larry Johnson (junior varsity boys tennis head coach), Taryn Johnson Lemieux (varsity boys swimming head coach), Andrew Schuler (junior varsity boys soccer head coach) and Brian Wilkinson (freshman football assistant coach). The motion to approve professional staff employment was made by Barry and supported by Chilpach; the Schedule B motion was made by Barry and supported by Lowery. Both motions carried on voice votes.
Downriver Career Technical Consortium (DCTC) agreement amendment: The board adopted a resolution approving amendments to the DCTC intra-district use agreement. The changes formalize property use, cost sharing and oversight after DCTC purchased a permanent facility (the former Trenton Athletic Club) with 61j funds; the amendments ensure the building will be used exclusively for DCTC programs and remain a shared asset among the nine member districts. Motion by Barry, supported by Dobek; carried on voice vote.
Administrative salary schedule and Bautista resolution: The board approved Administrative Regulation 4000.07 (administrative salary schedule) and adopted the Bautista v. Office of Retirement Services resolution intended to affirm that board-approved compensation practices should count toward retirement calculations. Motions were made by Barry (supported by Chilpach for the salary schedule and supported by Harris for the Bautista resolution); both motions carried on voice votes. The board described the salary schedule action as a response to recent court rulings about reporting salaries to the Office of Retirement Services.
Facilities and technology purchases: The board approved a lighting upgrade for the Woodhaven High School tennis courts to be performed by Douglas Electric at a cost of $134,482.92, to be paid from the district sinking fund. The board also approved a districtwide Boxlight mobile device management purchase and installation from Digital Age Technologies for $38,912, to be funded from the general fund technology budget. Motions for those items were made by Barry (supported by Lowery for the tennis lighting and supported by Dobek for the technology purchase); both motions carried on voice votes. The administration noted a punch-list walkthrough on the tennis courts and anticipated opening the courts the following week.
Vote procedure: Most approvals were adopted by voice vote with the clerk calling for “aye” and asking for any opposed; the meeting record shows no oppositions called for and the chair declared the motions carried. The board did not provide a roll-call naming each member’s individual vote in the meeting transcript.
