Board reviews MOU to add second SRO at new 6–12 campus; district net cost about $20,000

The Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education was briefed on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to expand school-resource-officer (SRO) coverage for the district’s new 6–12 campus.
Superintendent Dr. Selica told the board that historically the district has had one SRO at the high school and also purchased off-duty officers for the middle schools. Given the new consolidated campus that will serve grades 6–12, the superintendent said the district and city discussed an expanded arrangement to ensure two SROs on campus. Dr. Selica said the city will pay for “one and a half-plus” SROs while the district would cover the remainder; she estimated the district’s net incremental cost would be about $20,000.
The MOU includes required training and an annual contract structure for the SROs and was included in the superintendent’s consent agenda, which passed later in the meeting as part of routine approvals. Board members spoke positively about the expanded coverage; one member said, “I’m really excited that for only $20,000 more, we’re gonna have 2 SROs in our 6–12 buildings.”
The board did not amend the MOU at the meeting; the superintendent and district staff said they will coordinate final contract paperwork with the city and ensure training requirements in the MOU are fulfilled.
The MOU and related contracts will be implemented by the superintendent’s office in coordination with the police department and the district’s legal and human-resources staff.
