Evansville fire chief reports recruit graduations, promotions and ambulance procurement timeline

The chief announced recruit class 66 successfully passed the National Registry EMT exam on their first attempt and completed Firefighter I and II training; recruit class 67 also passed EMT tests and is completing firefighter certification. Graduation for both classes is scheduled for Oct. 3 at Ivy Tech. The department said recruits are now assigned to shifts.
The department also announced promotions: Battalion Chief Mike Cain was promoted to deputy chief of EMS; Captain Eric Jamieson was promoted to battalion chief; Lieutenant Chad Beckham was promoted to captain; and Lieutenant Dustin Kaposta was promoted to temporary captain while filling in for a deployed member. Several personnel completed probationary periods in July and August.
The chief reported a non‑contested coaching action was issued to a firefighter and a captain for an incident involving backing without a spotter that caused vehicle damage.
On ambulances, staff clarified that newly procured ambulances are scheduled to be placed into service on July 1, 2026, correcting earlier public reports that suggested a different timeline.
The commission also heard that promotional testing for investigator and incident safety officer positions is scheduled for October; the incident safety officer rank is equivalent to an instructor and will require a test rather than a lateral move, the chief said.
