Council authorizes demolition of unsafe house at 1259 Cooper Avenue

The Prattville City Council on Aug. 19 voted to demolish a dilapidated residential structure at 1259 Cooper Avenue, awarding a contract not to exceed $7,100 to 82 Auto Parts and Record Service LLC to remove the structure.
Councilor Whaley introduced the resolution, telling the council that the property had been the site of a structure fire and that code enforcement had followed the notice process; no repairs or permits had been obtained by the expiration of the notice. He noted neighbors had supported removal because of overgrowth and repeated nuisance conditions.
The resolution cites that the building inspector declared the structure unsafe on March 12, 2025, and that certified notices were sent to the last-known owners on March 17, 2025. The council previously declared the structure remained unsafe in a July 15, 2025 resolution. With no repairs completed, the council authorized demolition and charged the expense to the city's dilapidated house demolition budget line.
The resolution passed on a voice/hand vote.
