The Abilene MPO policy board discussed and approved a hiring procedure for a replacement executive director following the announced retirement of the current executive director.
Amanda/Adele from City of Abilene human resources explained the steps HR will take: update and post the job description, accept applications on the city’s website and (at the board’s discretion) post to professional outlets such as the Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations, the Texas chapter of the American Planning Association, the Texas Municipal League and SGR. Adele said posting and applicant tracking would be centralized and that paid postings (where desired) would be funded from MPO funds if the board chooses.
Board members discussed using a subcommittee to review initial applications. The board agreed that a subcommittee of two members — Chairman Price and Judge Crowley — would conduct initial screening and work with HR to produce a short list of candidates for full‑board interviews. Board members agreed to a three‑week posting window, with the subcommittee returning a short list (number of interviewees to be determined by the board) for a special meeting. A motion to proceed with the process and form the subcommittee was made during the meeting and moved forward.
What the action means: HR will post the position, collect applications, and work with the two‑person subcommittee on candidate screening. The board retains hiring authority for the final appointment; city HR and policies will govern the employment relationship because the executive director is an employee of the City of Abilene.
Public process note: the board discussed that any further interviews and final selection will be done in an open meeting or properly noticed session as required by the Texas Open Meetings Act.
