HACM reports hundreds of flood-related repairs after weekend storms; maintenance crews working overtime

The Housing Authority of the City of Milwaukee told commissioners Wednesday that a severe storm over the previous weekend produced hundreds of flood-related work orders across HACM properties.
Acting Executive Director Ken Barbot said the authority has received about 803 work orders so far this week and estimated that more than 400 of those are flood-related. HACM maintenance teams have closed roughly 110 of the urgent requests and are prioritizing households with emergency needs, Barbot said.
Barbot said HACM has placed orders for water heaters and furnaces and purchased pumps and dehumidifiers to assist affected households. The authority is coordinating with contractors to scale the response beyond in-house staff and is tracking overtime and material expenses in case state or federal relief becomes available.
Barbot also thanked HACM maintenance staff for extended shifts: “They have been working, many, many hours,” he said, noting crews worked late into Sunday to respond to immediate emergencies.
The authority plans to send informational guidance to residents about responsibilities (for example, whether insurance covers some losses) while HACM focuses on appliance replacement and cleanup for impacted units.
