Commissioners outline budget shortfall; consider cutting meeting room and court services

Commissioners told the Clay County Board they are working through a projected budget shortfall of roughly $236,000 and described early steps to reduce costs, including removing a proposed commissioner meeting room from upcoming building plans and reconsidering funding for court services.

"We're looking for ways to cut because we're 236,000 over," a commissioner said during the meeting, describing preliminary steps taken with project consultants. The board said the commissioner meeting room was an obvious, early cut and that court services may also be reduced or removed from the current plan.

County staff and commissioners said the work with the project's architect and manager is ongoing and that they expect to have more detailed line-item budget numbers by the September meeting. "By the end of the month, we should have some budget numbers for each segment where everything's gonna cost," a commissioner said.

Commissioners also reported a recent meeting with project stakeholders, including the project's CEO, the project manager and the architect. They described those participants as engaged and prepared, and said the team "did their homework." The discussion indicated the commission will continue reviewing project priorities and likely return with dollar figures and proposed adjustments at the next regular meeting.

The budget discussion occurred during the commissioners' reports portion of the agenda and did not include a formal vote or directive in the public record. Commissioners asked staff to return with more complete cost breakdowns and to bring recommended cuts or alternatives to the next meeting.

The board also noted forthcoming agenda items tied to joint jurisdiction and planning discussions about a railroad repair facility, which will proceed to a first reading at a joint meeting with the city; commissioners said the item is a permitted use rather than a rezoning.
