Board renames committees and proposes $18,000 cap for member professional development

The board will bring a first reading Aug. 18 to rename several standing committees (Operations, Division of Instruction, Human Resources, Board Policy Committee) and to authorize up to $18,000 for Board of Education professional development for 2025–26, with expenditures above $1,000 requiring prior board approval.
At the Committee of the Whole on Aug. 11, board members and staff discussed renaming standing committees to more closely reflect their functions and a proposed increase in the board’s professional-development authorization for the 2025–26 school year.
Mrs. Oakquist said the Building and Site Committee will be renamed Operations to encompass all operations departments. The Curriculum Committee will become the Division of Instruction, combining Elementary, Secondary, Student Services and Academic Services. The Personnel Committee will be renamed Human Resources, and the Policy Committee will be renamed the Board Policy Committee. The proposed bylaw changes will be presented for first reading at the regular board meeting on Aug. 18.
Also on Aug. 11, Oakquist said the board previously authorized $15,000 for board professional-development spending and that actual spending last year totaled just over $11,000 for seven individuals. She recommended increasing the authorization to “up to and not to exceed” $18,000 for the school year, with any individual expenditure greater than $1,000 requiring prior board approval.
Board members said rising conference and accommodation costs and a new board member’s expected training needs informed the recommendation. The Committee of the Whole did not take a final vote on the proposal; the matters will be on the Aug. 18 regular meeting agenda for action.
