Cerritos commissioners raise aging‑resident housing concerns; staff to host community open house on potential rezoning

Commissioners at the Aug. 6 Cerritos Planning Commission meeting used the reports section to flag citywide housing and demographic concerns and to promote upcoming outreach tied to the city’s housing element work.
Commissioner Chowhan told colleagues the city has an aging population and urged review of local regulations that may limit residents’ ability to adapt homes as they age. "We are an aging city," Chowhan said, noting demographic data showing sizable populations in older age bands. He asked staff to consider whether backyard coverage and other design controls could be adjusted to help elderly residents remain in place, saying alternatives such as accessory dwelling units may not be suitable for some older homeowners.
Staff clarified that the city does not have a development proposal for the Bloomfield and South Street site but that a community open house has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 13 at the Senior Center (Aspen Pine Room) to discuss rezoning work being done to meet the Cerritos housing element. Staff provided a project page and more information at cerritos.gov/rezone.
Commissioners who attended a recent AAPI conference reported back on insights about data and policy, and Chair Reyes and others thanked the council for supporting attendance. No formal action was taken; the items were discussion and public outreach updates.
