Nassau County approves $14.8 million contract to fully reconstruct County Road 121

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners on July 28 approved a $14,800,000 construction contract (CM3944) with Anderson Columbia Company Inc. to fully reconstruct County Road 121 from the Duval County line to County Road 119.

County Deputy Manager and County Engineer Robert Campanion told commissioners the work is a full reconstruction — not just a resurfacing — that will extend down to subgrade, “about 18 inches deep,” and will include detours and traffic slowdowns during construction. He said the final product should benefit residents along the route.

Commissioners emphasized the project’s scale and funding. One commissioner noted the project represents “probably the largest ticket item that we’ve had come before” and said the county received two consecutive state appropriations of $9 million each through then-State Representative Aaron Bean. Campanion and county staff said the contract is within budget and indicated there may be savings depending on final bid comparisons; they also cautioned that potential change orders could affect final cost.

The board approved the contract by voice vote, recorded as 5-0 in favor. Commissioners warned residents in District 4 to expect detours, halts and slowdowns during construction and to plan accordingly.

The motion to approve specified authorization for the chairman to execute contract CM3944; no start date was specified in the public discussion. County staff said they are available to answer questions as the project moves forward.
