Committee approves engineering contract amendments for Allen Road grade separation and Hawthorne Bridge replacement

The Wayne County Committee on Public Services on July 8 voted to approve two contract amendments to continue construction engineering oversight on two bridge projects: the Allen Road grade separation and the Hawthorne Bridge replacement near the Nankin Mills Interpretive Center in Westland.
Sam Ikaldi, director of engineering, said HNTB Michigan had been the county’s engineering firm on the Allen Road grade separation and that an amendment is needed because the firm’s contract expired while construction oversight was ongoing. "We're anticipating this bridge had some construction activity started sometime in May," Ikaldi said, and the amendment will allow HNTB to continue overseeing construction through completion.
Elizabeth Isler, chief of planning, parks, said a separate amendment extends construction engineering services for the Hawthorne Bridge replacement project because the original agreement expired before the project finished. "It’s just finishing that contract out because it expired before the project was done," she said.
The committee approved the two items together on a motion moved by Commissioner Kinloch and supported by May Doones. The chair announced the motion carried for items 1 and 2.
