Councilors and Airport Director Jose Saavedra discussed reestablishing a stand‑alone airport committee during the Bangor City Government Operations Committee meeting on July 21. The conversation focused on whether a separate committee would improve oversight and communications or whether enhanced reporting within the existing Business and Economic Development (BNED) Committee would suffice.
Saavedra told the committee that the primary answer depends on the council’s objectives for a committee. “It all depends on what the objectives are,” he said, describing how a dedicated committee would provide a focused platform for airport projects and communications but that citywide procurement and other processes would still govern project execution. He recommended that, before a statutory change, the council consider adjustments to the current reporting structure — for example, adding a recurring airport director’s report to the BNED agenda and scheduling quarterly, deeper updates when needed.
Committee members recalled that the airport committee had been disbanded in 2023 and reassigned to BNED; some said the current reporting meets their needs while others said a dedicated committee produced more visibility into airport operations in the past. Suggestions during the discussion included: a quarterly BNED meeting focused only on airport items, periodic special meetings centered on airport themes, and the idea of a citizen steering committee to provide public input.
Any move to reestablish an airport committee would require an ordinance amendment and two council readings, the committee heard. Given the mixed views in the meeting, councilors directed staff and the airport director to pursue enhanced reporting options first and revisit the idea if reporting changes do not provide the desired visibility.
The committee did not vote to change the ordinance at the July 21 meeting.
