Shakopee proclaims October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month after Southern Valley Alliance presentation

The Shakopee City Council on Oct. 7 adopted a proclamation declaring October 2025 Domestic Violence Awareness Month after hearing a presentation from Josh Davis of the Southern Valley Alliance.
Josh Davis, investigation sergeant with the Shakopee Police Department and a member of the Southern Valley Alliance board, told the council that Southern Valley Alliance is the only organization providing services to domestic violence victims in Scott and Carver counties and that the group served 225 victims in Shakopee last fiscal year, answered more than 2,000 crisis-line calls and provides crisis intervention, housing assistance, safety planning and other services.
The proclamation recognizes advocates serving survivors and encourages citizens to engage with Southern Valley Alliance and similar organizations. Davis said the organization moved its advocacy center to Shakopee in January 2024, after which demand for services increased about 20 percent because victims had better access. He also said Southern Valley Alliance faces “significant federal, state and local funding cuts” and urged residents to contact legislators about nonprofit funding.
Councilor Lara moved to adopt the proclamation and Councilor Contreras seconded. The council voted in favor of the proclamation during the Oct. 7 meeting; the clerk recorded the motion as passed.
The proclamation text cited national statistics on intimate-partner violence and called on the community to support victims and hold offenders accountable. Davis provided the organization’s website, listed by the presenter as svamn.org, for residents seeking more information or wanting to support the group.
The city and police department said they make referrals to Southern Valley Alliance and other services when officers encounter people in need of domestic-violence support. The proclamation will be entered into the minutes of the Oct. 7 regular meeting.
